How to use an electronic thermometer

Today, electronic thermometers are increasingly replacing mercury analogues, and there are many reasons for this. Safety is one of them, because electronic devices do not contain mercury and glass, and at the same time they can measure body temperature just as accurately. But there is a difference between technical accuracy and usage accuracy. How to use an electronic thermometer to get accurate results?

As a rule, measuring temperature with an electronic thermometer is very simple - press a button, and after measuring, read the results on the screen. However, there are some nuances that depend on the method of measuring temperature.

  1. Axillary method is the most common and known to us. The thermometer should be placed in the armpit and pressed tightly against the body. In this case, the skin should be dry and clean to avoid measurement errors. At the end of the measurement, the thermometer will beep. However, with this method of measurement, you should not immediately pull out the thermometer - wait 3-4 minutes, and only then check the results. I make this mistaket most often, and it is because of premature completion of measurements that inaccurate results are obtained.
  2. The oral method, in which the tip of the thermometer is placed under the tongue, is the most widespread in Europe. With this method, you can already focus on the sound signal of the thermometer.
  3. The rectal method (measurement in the rectum) is considered the most accurate because that in this case the tightest contact of the thermometer with the body is achieved. Immediately after the sound signal, you can take out the thermometer.

Nregardless of what the measurement method you have chosen, you should measure the temperature in the same place during the entire period of illness. Body temperature should be measured 30 minutes after waking up, after exercising and eating. All these tips will help you avoid measurement errors. If you need to measure your child's body temperature, hold the thermometer and help press it closer to the body. If the thermometer is used by several family members, it should be disinfected after each measurement. To do this, you can use an alcohol solution or disinfectant wipes.

If you follow all the above tips, the measurement accuracy with an electronic thermometer will be +/- 0.1 ℃.
